Mankind, throughout history, has developed poetry as a basic cultural component in any given society. The introduction of poetic prose into groups seems to be a therapeutic tool of great importance. Rollo May refers to the therapeutic dynamic, which stems out from the “encounter” between an individual and an art object, where the interaction between the internal reality of unconscious and the external reality, “kosmos”, gives the opportunity for assigning a new meaning of one’s position in the network of human relationships. Poetry can be didactic or catharctic and may give rise to suppressed traumatic events or memories. Group psychotherapy dynamics offer a fertile soil where the above mentioned “encounter” enriched by the personal, interpersonal, group and social aspects of human interaction and communication, both in a conscious and an unconscious level , may become a means of therapeutic intervention which is not adequately articulated yet and needs further exploration. The research presented will attempt to blend detailed study of examples from a limited context, with broader discussion of the therapeutic impact of the clinical use of poetry.
